If there is any topic on Mumbai that gathers curious ears, it has to be the underworld. One image that comes in front of everyone is the face of the dashing don Dawood Ibrahim in his aviator glasses. It s could very well be called the defining image of the underworld of Mumbai. There have been a number of books on Mumbai Underworld but there are very few who have had the meat to bring it out in the open. Here are a few of them.

The Newsroom Mafia by Oswald Periera

Gripping, thrilling and fast-paced, Author Oscar Pereira s The Newsroom Mafia is a piece of work that gets you in the driver s seat right from the start. A veteran-journalist, Oscar gives an inside view of the unholy nexus between the police, the corporate sector, the underworld and the print media aptly known as the Fourth Estate. While many of us look up to the press and take their word as the final one, Oscar sheds light on how members of the media exploit it for their own good. The plot surrounds an underworld Don, Narayan Swamy, who is challenged by a Supercop, the Commissioner of Mumbai, Donald Fernandez. While the commissioner is a sincere cop, his job demands a lot of dirty tactics to trap the invincible gangster. The Don, usually humble and sober, is a witty character with a world full of cash, political backup and some good brains from the media. While many stories are just of politicos and armed gangsters taking the center stage, here the media steals the show. The book gives very good insights on how the media can twist and turn any story to make it look good or bad in return for some money and power. A racy read throughout.

Dongri to Dubai by Hussain Zaidi

With nearly 2 decades of experience under his belt, Zaidi takes us through the infancy of the underworld to the time when it proved to be too big for the authorities crushing anything and everything in its path. Stories of Haji Mastan, Karim Lala and the Pathans are not only interesting but also insightful and Zaidi goes on to cover some minute details of incidents which proved to be turning points in the history of the Mumbai underworld. Most importantly, the book covers the stratospheric rise of Dawood Ibrahim Kaskar. Once a boy of a humble cop, Dongri to Dubai, is a chronicle of how Dawood stormed his way through the ranks to become the uncrowned king of Mumbai. The book spans over six decades of the Mumbai Mafia in which Dawood rose from a petty smuggler to become the don of Mumbai and graduate with time to a global terrorist to create havoc in India and elsewhere.

Mafia Queens of Mumbai by S. Hussain Zaidi

\’Mafia Queens of Mumbai\’ is a collection of stories about 13 women who ruled the Mumbai underworld at different times. Tales about fearless, gutsy women ranging from rice hoarder-turned-bootlegger Jenabai Daaruwali to the brothel madam with a golden heart Gangubai Kathewali to noted gangster Ashwin Naik\’s wife Neeta Naik who was apparently gunned down by her own husband while holding a Government office nonetheless make for an interesting read.

Many online bookstores and book clubs carry these monstrous books who give us a view on what happens in the dark world. If you are one of those wanting to know the bad and ugly, pick these ones.
